Press release: Heron Energy Has Been Awarded Land Allocation for Gigawatt-Scale Project in South Australia

Heron Energy, part of TEAL, has been awarded a land allocation through the South Australian Government’s Renewable Energy Feasibility Area release process. The proposed project will form part of a broader energy precinct involving multiple developers.

Heron Energy's project is a gigawatt-scale, multi-technology renewable energy development near Port Augusta, South Australia. It sits within the Whyalla West Renewable Energy Feasibility Licence Release Area, on the lands of the Barngarla People. With access to some of Australia's best wind resources, the project's capacity and technology mix are being investigated as part of ongoing development activities.

The project is envisaged as part of a wider energy precinct, bringing together multiple developers to progress individual projects within a shared regional initiative. In the near term, Heron Energy continues to engage with direct project stakeholders on advancing this opportunity, with construction expected in the early 2030's.

“Heron Energy is honoured to be selected under South Australia’s competitive process for the Whyalla West region. This achievement reflects our strong commitment to responsible, sustainable and balanced renewable energy growth in the region. We look forward to helping realise the full potential of the State’s world-class renewable energy resources, delivering lasting benefits for communities, industry and the broader energy transition.” — Heron Energy spokesperson
"Heron's proposed 1.6 gigawattwind development is another significant opportunity for Whyalla and the Upper Spencer Gulf as we look to build on the region's industrial strengths and attract the next generation of investment. Through our Australian-first renewable energy legislation, we're opening the door for companies like Heron to explore projects that could help power South Australia's industrial future. There's still important work ahead before these projects can proceed, but the scale of ambition we're seeing demonstrates the enormous renewable energy potential of this region. ”— Hon Tom Koutsantonis, Minister for Energy and Mining

The anticipated allocation marks an important milestone for Heron Energy and supports the company's continued development activities within TEAL.
